The Styrax japonica is an old fashioned tree. There was a mature one here when we purchased the property. The blooms in June are fragrant and to stand under the tree and look up into the bell-shaped blossoms that dangle along the branches is heavenly.
Colonial Williamsburg identified it as a Japanese Snowbell and I immediately purchased two more, one with pink, one with white blooms. The one pictured is planted on a bank above a natural pond.
Our mature tree is 25′ tall. The trees are hardy to zone 5 and virtually pest free. These showy small trees really give dogwoods a run for the money.
lovely!

Really striking. I don’t think I’ve noticed this before. Can’t wait to see a photo of the tree in bloom.
